Chapter Ten

The next week passed by in a blur for Savannah. When she was at work, even if Noah was only working part of the same shift, he made sure to seek her out and say hello, at the very least. A few times he backed her up in the elevator and kissed her before the doors opened on another floor and people got on with them. Those quickie encounters always left her breathless and panting.

Ethan normally worked odd hours anyway, so he was usually in the unit each day when she started her shift at three in the afternoon. He went out of his way all week to talk to her, and more than once they shared a very quick but extremely passionate kiss in the men’s locker room while no one else was around.

The way he peeked outside the door before taking her hand and leading her back into the hallway had her giggling. “I feel like we’re in high school.”

“No one in my high school would have given it a second thought if they’d walked in on us just now.”

“Well they would here.”

Jimmie came to the unit to see her when he got off work, and several evenings during that week the four of them ate dinner together outside on one of the picnic tables. They laughed and goofed around, ignoring the curious and surprised glances from others who were outside.

She wanted to ask Jimmie if things were better at home, but knew he’d say something if it got bad enough that he was ready to take Noah or Ethan up on their offers to let him move in. She’d learned since Jimmie had returned to Sin that it was best to let him bring up his home situation, rather than constantly asking him about it.

Late in Savannah’s shift one evening, Kay-Jean Harrell came into the empty patient room that Savannah was setting up for a trauma that had just come into the ER. Kay-Jean was the ICU nurse who nearly got fired the month before because she’d filed a false report accusing Dr. Preston Benson of sexual harassment. Kay-Jean pulled the curtain closed and glared at Savannah.

“What’s wrong?” asked Savannah. “Isn’t the patient coming after all?”

“No, she’s coming. It’s my admission, of course.”

Kay-Jean had been moved to twelve-hour night shifts where Jackie felt she might cause less trouble, and Kay-Jean wasn’t happy about it. Plus, no matter who was the charge nurse on any shift Kay-Jean worked, she always got the worst patients now, or at least the first admission. Unofficially, the entire unit was punishing her for what she’d done to Preston, hoping she’d grow tired of it and leave.

Savannah put down the lead wires she’d been attaching to the monitor cables. “Oh, I’m sorry. Did you want to set the room up? I wasn’t busy so I thought I’d help.” Kay-Jean was also weird about other people setting up her rooms, and Savannah knew that, but she liked to keep busy all the time. It made the shift go faster.
